The Town of the Forty Fountains
"Pernes is a lovely sample of those little Provencal towns.
It is located in the plain on a little river which carries a trickle of water from the Monts de Vaucluse to the Sorgue. A charming location, beautiful trees around, and the mountains so near. ...
In the town, the ancient houses packed tightly against each toher or the high walls in warm colours along stony little streets, very narrow streets, with unexpected forks, shady in the corners where the sun cannot slide over them easily.
Little squares with old mossy fountains can be sen here and there, and where the streets cross, under high uninteresting buildings, under dark heavy mansions, like the ancient palaces of little Italian towns..."
