Isle sur la Sorgue


For a long time, the abundant and regular waters of la Sorgue provided the power necessary for crafts and industry. The waterwhjeels made it possible to install flour mills as early as XIIth century, and after than the creation of workshops to treat wool and silk.

The few picturesque wheels remaining today and give a particular cachet to L’Isle, do not give a good idea of the sixty-two which existed in XIXth century and of the intense activity at the time, while silk was providing new fortunes,

L’Isle became the main wool centre of the department. The town celebrates the former jewry <hose inhabitants, protected from the Pope, took an active part in the town's prosperity.

L’Isle keeps the memory of its fishermen alive, fishermen who in their flat-bottomed boats, the nego chin, set off in summer and winter, equipped in different ways, in search of freshwater crayfish, trout, char or eel.
